With turquoise pools, tropical forest and a spectacular multi-tiered cascade, Kuang Si Falls is one of the natural highlights of Laos. Located south of Luang Prabang, it is an easy and unforgettable countryside escape.

Here is everything you need to know to organise your visit — including where to enjoy a proper lunch when the choice around the waterfalls is limited.

Where Are Kuang Si Falls?

Kuang Si Falls are approximately 29 kilometres south of Luang Prabang. The journey usually takes between 45 minutes and one hour, passing villages, farms, rice fields and forested hills.

KuangSi Kitchen and KuangSi Resort are located in Ban Ou, around four kilometres before the waterfalls, directly along the same route.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

The waterfalls can be visited throughout the year, but their appearance changes with the seasons.

From November to February, temperatures are cooler and the water is often clear and beautifully turquoise. From March to May, the weather is hotter and water levels may be lower. During the rainy season, from June to October, the waterfall becomes more powerful, although the water can be less blue after heavy rain.

For fewer visitors and cooler temperatures, try to arrive close to opening time. Kuang Si Falls are currently advertised as opening daily from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm. The official entrance fee for foreign visitors is currently 60,000 LAK, but prices and schedules may change.

What Can You Do There?

A shaded forest path leads past several natural pools before reaching the main waterfall. Bridges and viewpoints offer excellent places for photographs.

Swimming is permitted in certain designated pools, so bring a swimsuit, towel and a change of clothes. The water can be surprisingly cool, even on a hot day.

Near the entrance, visitors can also see the Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre, which cares for Asiatic black bears rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.

More active visitors can follow the trail towards the upper part of the waterfall. The path can be steep and slippery, particularly after rain, so suitable shoes are recommended.

Allow around two to three hours to enjoy the pools, waterfall and bear rescue centre without rushing.

Where to Eat Near Kuang Si Falls

It is useful to plan your meal before leaving Luang Prabang. The choice of restaurants immediately around the waterfalls is relatively limited, and the simplest places can become busy when several groups arrive together.

Located only around five minutes from the falls, KuangSi Kitchen offers a more comfortable place to stop before or after your visit.

The restaurant serves Lao family cuisine prepared with locally sourced ingredients. You can have lunch on the terrace overlooking the rice fields or choose an air-conditioned dining room on a hot day. There is ample parking, clean toilets and plenty of space for couples, families and groups.

Two schedules work particularly well:

  • Visit Kuang Si Falls early, then stop at KuangSi Kitchen for a relaxed lunch on the way back.

  • Have an early lunch at KuangSi Kitchen, then visit the waterfalls as some morning groups begin to leave.

This allows you to enjoy the waterfall without having to rush back to Luang Prabang simply to find a wider choice of food. Discover KuangSi Kitchen

How to Get There

A private car or minivan provides the most comfort and flexibility. Tuk-tuks and shared minivans can also be arranged in Luang Prabang, although they usually follow fixed departure and return times.

Independent travellers sometimes use scooters, but should have an appropriate licence, insurance and a good helmet. Road conditions can become more difficult after rain.
